An open letter to fellow libertarians about Donald Trump

Dear fellow libertarians of the world,

We need to have a serious heart to heart. The topic? Donald Trump.

Before we proceed and because I know your blood pressure is already rising, just let it out. Yell, curse, denounce the world, and strain your vocal chords. Not enough? Break your keyboards, smash your monitor, flip over your chair and send it clear across the room, knock over your desk over, and ruin your home.

Go ahead. Unleash your inner Bruce Banner.

Feel better now? Let’s proceed.

It’s been clear for months that everyone has an opinion about the controversial businessman and for the most part among libertarians, he’s not well received. Do I believe he would be a good President? Probably not. But I’m not going to be apart of the post-New Hampshire flock of Chicken Littles who believe the sky is falling because he won a primary that hasn’t voted for a non-incumbent President in almost three decades.

Senator Rand Paul spent months becoming less of a liberty candidate and more of an anti-Trump candidate. It was a rabid hatred that saw a lot of the Senator Paul headlines really proved he was serious when he said he would stop at nothing to stop The Donald.

Seriously? This is what former Congressman Ron Paul spent two presidential elections building a network for? To build a spawning pool of Trump Derangement Syndrome?

To be sure, President Trump is a bad idea. The only possible argument in favor of supporting his candidacy is to bring down the Republican Party, though Reince Priebus and the Republican National Committee has done an excellent job of that on their own.

But the aftermath of the New Hampshire primary has left many libertarians launching into DEFCON 1 because Donald Trump won the primary that in the past has selected Mitt Romney, Pat Buchanan, and John McCain twice. Stellar track record.

Seriously, we can calm down. Trump winning New Hampshire literally means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

The way the field is shaping up, this could drag all the way to the National Convention. What will happen there? The establishment will broker a compromise moderate who will take down Trump and one or more failed runner ups.

Until then, why are you helping the same establishment that burned Ron Paul?

Don’t like Donald Trump? Fine. Don’t support him. But this rhetoric over the arrival of the end times is absolute insanity. And in all honesty, there are more legitimate threats to liberty in this race like Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio.

Life goes on. There’s a lot of primary time left, which means a lot of delegates left for opponents to earn and caucuses to rig to a degree that Debbie Wasserman Schultz would be proud of.

Until then, relax. Do something productive like support Rand Paul in the Senate or Thomas Massie and Justin Amash in the House, your favorite state and local liberty legislators and politicians, and work to enact change locally.

The world isn’t over because the second state of fifty casted votes. It’s the honest truth.

For liberty my friends,

-Chris Dixon
